GENERAL PROCEDURES

OVERVIEW
General orthopaedic conditions directly impact the body's musculoskeletal system, affecting movement and causing discomfort.

TREATMENT
Procedures to treat general orthopaedic conditions include:

1TRAUMA AND FRACTURE SURGERY

Surgical repair in a trauma setting requires multiple procedures to correct severe breaks as a result of a sudden injury. These injuries usually take a long time to heal due to the severity of each case. Reconstruction in conjunction with fixation involves the use of screws, pins and plates to stabilise broken bone pieces.

2KNEE ARTHROSCOPY AND REPAIR

Knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) is less invasive, meaning knee repair occurs through tiny incisions. A small camera is inserted through one of these incisions into the knee joint. While diagnosing conditions affecting the mobility of the knee, noticeable repairs can happen on the same day. Arthroscopy is a surgical means of repairing a tear in the meniscus, reconstructing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), trimming injured articular cartilage, removing bone or repairing damaged ligaments in the knee.

3SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY AND REPAIR

Shoulder arthroscopy involves minimal disturbance to tissue while an arthroscope is inserted through a small incision in the joint to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the shoulder. Surgery is done to repair a torn rotator cuff, labrum and ligaments and remove damaged tissue and cartilage. Shoulder decompression surgery is performed to treat a common condition called shoulder impingement that presents with discomfort when raising an arm above the head. Rotator cuff tears are repaired by reconstructing/suturing the shoulder's torn tendons via mini-open surgery or shoulder arthroscopic surgery in order to regain full function of the shoulder muscles.

4CARPAL TUNNEL SURGERY

Pain and altered sensation or pins & needles in the thumb, index and middle finger may be due to carpal tunnel syndrome with compression of the median nerve at the level of the wrist. Carpal tunnel release is a procedure to release the median nerve. First, a tiny incision is made over the palm above the carpal tunnel ligament. Afterwards, cutting through the ligament alleviates pressure on the median nerve and thus improving symptoms.

5CUBITAL TUNNEL & ULNAR TUNNEL SURGERY

Cubital and Ulnar tunnel surgery is a procedure to free a trapped ulnar nerve. Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when nearby tissue increases pressure on the ulnar nerve inside the cubital tunnel, a space through which the nerve passes at the elbow around the ‘funny bone’ area. Cubital tunnel release involves cutting through the ligament to alleviate pressure on the ulnar nerve, similar to surgery to treat carpal tunnel syndrome.

6TRIGGER FINGERS

Trigger finger release is a procedure to treat an abnormally bent finger in one or both hands. Dr du Toit creates a minor incision at the finger’s base and cuts open the narrow section of the tendon sheath. Surgery relieves discomfort and prevents the finger from clicking and locking permanently.

7DE QUERVAIN'S TENOSYNOVITIS

De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is an uncomfortable condition that targets the tendons in the wrist, near the thumb. Pain intensifies when making a fist, turning the wrist and holding anything. Surgery to treat De Quervain's Tenosynovitis involves cutting open the tendon sheath to release the affected tendon and relieve pressure in the area.

8TENDON & LIGAMENT INJURIES

Tears in tendons and ligaments occur when the soft tissues that attach muscles to joints become damaged, for example, the Achilles tendon. A torn ligament or tendon results in pain and swelling in the area. Surgery to repair a torn tendon or ligament includes reconstruction using a graft to replace the lost tendon piece or directly repairing the tear in the tendon. By using a tendon graft from another area of your body to secure the tendon firmly in place, full function and stability may be obtained.
